Quick Creamy Steel Cut Oats Porridge Recipe

What is Oatmeal?

Oatmeal is a grain that comes in many different varieties. Some are relatively healthier than others. Popular varieties are:

Steel Cut Oats

The seed inside the husk of the oat grain is called oat groats. Steel cut oats are the broken oats that occur in the de-husking process. These oats are less processed.

Rolled Oats

The de-husked oats are steamed, cut, and then rolled to form “Rolled Oats.” These are the the old fashioned rolled oats.

Quick Cooking Rolled Oats

These are de-husked oats that have been cut into tiny pieces prior to being steamed, and rolled.

Instant Oats

These are pre-cooked and subsequently dried before flavorings are added.

Nutritional Benefits of Oats

According to a study published in 2015, consuming whole grain oats provided the following nutritional benefits:

Protein

Unsaturated Fatty Acids

Fiber

Magnesium

Micronutrients in Oats

Amazingly, oats provides micronutrients such as vitamin E, folates, zinc, iron, selenium, copper manganese, carotenoids, choline, sulpher, lignins, and phytic acid. Oats also provide Trace Minerals such as Copper, and iron.

Creamy Steel Cut Oats Porridge Recipe

Ingredients:

1/2 Cup Cooked Steel Cut Oats (Can be cooked ahead and kept in refrigerator for up to 5 days.)

1/4 Tsp Black Pepper (to activate curcumin in turmeric.)

1/2 Tsp Vanilla Extract

1 Tsp Ground Cinnamon

1Tsp Grated Frozen Ginger Root (How to Prep.)

1Tsp Grated Frozen Turmeric Root (How to Prep.)

1/4 Cup Organic Grass Fed Milk

1 Cup of Water

Directions:

Set stove to simmer. Add water, and cooked steel cuts oat to saucepan, and stir. Once warmed up, add ginger, turmeric, black pepper, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and milk. Simmer to consistency you prefer.

Serve in a bowl.

You may add sweetener of your choice. I would suggest local honey, and sprinkle ground cinnamon on top, or simply add whatever toppings you enjoy.

Ginger & Turmeric Roots Prep Ahead

Ginger and turmeric roots can be peeled, washed, and dried, and freeze in separate containers. They add incredible depth and flavor to the oatmeal, as well as numerous health benefits. The best part is that the frozen roots can be easily grated with a microplane grater.
