If you are like me, you have probably heard about the numerous external as well as internal benefits of Intermittent Fasting from books written by doctors such as Dr. Jason Fung, and other books by renowned health gurus such as Dave Asprey and Mark Sisson.
The benefits of Intermittent Fasting are innumerable. Following are a few that appeals to most people:
Alertness/Clarity/No Brain Fog – because your body isn’t busy expending energy to digest food around the clock.
Weight Loss – intermittent fasting reset your hormones.
Reset Appetite/Body Weight – intermittent fasting heals your body and allow your appetite and body weight to adjust to their optimal level.
Autophagy – intermittent fasting activates autophagy which is a method of your body clearing “garbage” cells, and aid in renewal.
Body Detoxification – not eating all the time allows your body the time to detoxify harmful chemicals.
Intermittent Fasting can be thought of literally as time between meals. However, the usual three to four hours that people often wait between meals is not long enough to turn on the benefits of fasting. Most researchers conclude that the benefits of fasting kick in after at least 16 hours of fasting. My IF plan is to do the 16:8 Method for thirty days, evaluate the results, and then tweak the plan if necessary.
This 16:8 Method Intermittent Fasting method can be customized to fit your lifestyle. For example, if you love breakfast, then you can have a large breakfast and all other food intake within eight hours of your breakfast and then STOP eating for 16 hours.
My plan is to have an early dinner, and then break my fast 16 hours later. I do not plan on cutting any food groups from my meal plan.
My Intermittent Fasting journey began at 7pm on a Friday evening. I had a sumptuous meal at an Indian restaurant along with dessert, and hot tea that I finished at 7pm. I was so incredibly full, uncomfortably full actually, after consuming a lamb based dinner dish.
There were no hunger pangs throughout the first night of fasting or even the next morning. But I was craving some hot coffee upon waking up. I had freshly brewed ground coffee beans, with no milk, as adding calories (50 calories or more) will kick you out of your “fasting.” The black coffee was neither delicious nor satisfying in my opinion.
I was hungry by 11am and broke my fast with a huge breakfast of two avocado sourdough toast with eggs. I ate all of my other meals throughout an 8 hour window, and started fasting again.
I had more energy in during the morning compared to other days when I would wake up and have breakfast. Throughout the day my energy level stayed very stable, but rapidly increased around 9pm. All of my cells felt alive at 11pm. It was a strange feeling of having energy coursing through my body and being “alive”.
I loved the new found energy in the mornings, and throughout the day. However, I started felting bloated early in the afternoon. Later I realized that I was eating too much during the eight hour window. Emotionally I felt like I needed to eat everything in sight because I wouldn’t be eating until the next day.
I will work on changing that going forward.
